-
1
We Provide Free and Low-Cost Legal Help
We believe in giving back to our community. That’s why we offer free (pro bono) and reduced-cost legal services to those in need. We also:
- Help clients connect with public assistance programs like housing, Medicaid and food aid.
- Assist with mental health and addiction treatment referrals.
- Take on cases related to poverty law, such as unfair landlord disputes and aggressive debt collection.
-
2
We Operate as a Non-Profit
Unlike traditional law firms, we don’t make a profit. Any money we earn goes toward:
- Operating expenses, payroll and client-related costs.
- Investing in better resources for our clients.
- Donations to other charities.
-
3
Salaries Are Set by a Board
A six-member Board of Directors decides employee pay, including for our attorneys. No one can set their own salary, ensuring fairness.
-
4
We Have No Owners
As a non-profit, our firm doesn’t have owners. If we ever close, all remaining assets would go to charity or public service programs.
How We Handle Criminal Defense Cases
We represent clients in three ways, based on their financial situation:
-
State Public Defender (SPD) Cases: Clients who qualify for public defense pay a set fee to the State Public Defender’s Office. The State covers all other legal costs, and we are paid directly by the State.
-
Court-Appointed Cases: If a client earns too much for SPD but can’t afford private rates, a judge can assign us as their attorney. The county pays us, and the client repays the county over time, interest-free.
-
Private Cases: If a client doesn’t qualify for SPD or court-appointed help, they must hire a private attorney at their own cost. Retainers range from $3,000 to $25,000+, depending on the case complexity and trial likelihood.
